What is powder coating

Powder coating is a method of applying a decorative and protective finish to materials and products. The powder used for the process is a mixture of finely ground particles of pigment and resin, which is sprayed onto a surface to be coated. The charged powder particles adhere to the electrically
grounded surfaces until heated and fused into a smooth coating in a curing oven. The result is a uniform, durable, high quality, and attractive finish. Powder coating is the fastest growing finishing technology in North America, representing over 10% of all industrial finishing applications.

More Durable

Powder coated surfaces are more resistant to chipping, scratching, fading, and wearing than other finishes. Color selection comes with high and low gloss, metallic, and clear finishes available. Colors stay bright and vibrant longer.
Powder coating makes "hard use" surfaces retain their new look much longer.
How much longer is determined by the care given, just as any other fine finish,
powder coating will last much longer given the same care you do your motorcycle now.

What is the procedure for powder coating part?

First strip the part down to bare metal, then prep the metal (clean it with acetone) so it has no oil or other contaminates on its surface.
The part is then masked off for any place on the part that should not be coated with a special hi temp tape.
Plug any screw or bolt hole as to keep the powder from invading  the thread areas.
The part is then suspended with a electrostatic charge applied to the part and a  coat of  powder applied.
The part is then put into an oven to be baked and cure.
It is then taken and cooled, and either coated again if needed.
( needed for some special powders like iridescent and translucent colors)
It is then  ready for use or in the case of sheet metal wet sanding and buffing out, then it is ready.
Once cured you can wax it or wash it any way you like.
Unlike paint it is ready to use no further cure time is needed.

Just How Durable is Powder Coat?

Powder Coat finish is approximately 10 times tougher than a paint finish.

In what shape does my part have to be in to be powder coated?

First of all the part has to be metal, as an electrostatic charge is applied to attract the
powder as it is applied to the part.

Second, the part has to be down to bare metal as it cannot be applied over another
type of finish.

Third, Bondo is a no no, a special body filler is used that has a metal base so the powder coat will attach to it better if a dent needs to be filled. If any bondo is present it will have to be removed and repaired
correctly, this will up the cost and time and labor to do them.

Do prices quoted reflect stripping the old finish off my parts?

Yes !  but keep in mind that any dents or cracks in the metal that have to be repaired
the additional cost are added to a quoted price.

What if my part e.g.. tank, fenders do have a dent, can this be fixed?

To be free of any dents or cracks makes the job easier to do,
a special body filler is used to fill imperfections, but that ups the cost and time and labor to do them.

I want to apply decals or have airbrush work done on my tank and fenders,
Can I have this done and have a clear powder coat applied over them?

Clear coat is available but can only be applied over another powder coated surface.
If you want decals or custom graphics you can have them applied on the powder coat itself,
then a clear coat of regular paint must be used over the applied artwork..
